The hidden cost of cancer:
Medical menopause and fertility loss

Cancer treatment can trigger sudden, medically-induced menopause and fertility loss often with intense physical, emotional, and psychological effects. Yet many yoga teachers feel unsure how to support students navigating these changes.

This 2-hour live masterclass offers a compassionate, practical introduction to understanding medical menopause in the cancer context and how yoga can provide meaningful, trauma-sensitive support.

Palliative Care: When your student’s cancer is not curable

Despite amazing advances in medical care, sadly not all cancer is curable. Sometimes this is known from the initial diagnosis but we do not always know in advance who will eventually move on to palliative care. Working with students as they approach end of life is both a privilege and a unique challenge.

This workshop explores not only sensitive and useful ways of supporting a student in their final phase, but also whether this is the right area for you and what you might need in place as personal support if you take on this special work.

There are many reasons why someone with cancer may prefer to keep attending a general or mixed class rather than a specialist yoga for cancer class. In situations like these we need to find a safe and effective way to include them in our class that is beneficial to all students.

This workshop will give you guiding principles about how to design and deliver your class whilst also meeting the needs of someone going through cancer treatment.

Cancer & Women's Health: Supporting students with breast cancer

As a yoga teacher, breast cancer is the most likely type of cancer you will come across in your class. You are likely to have it show up whether or not you intend to work with cancer! 1 in 7 women will develop breast cancer and since women make up the majority of yoga students I feel it is essential that all teachers have some understanding of the needs of women facing this.

This workshop will give an overview of common treatments and side effects that women with breast cancer face and some practical information about recovery from breast surgery to best support those students in your class.

Managing Cancer Treatment: Adapting your teaching styles and cues

When we work with people who are going through cancer treatment we need to take a very different approach to our teaching style and language. Our traditional approach of gradually moving through beginner, intermediate, advanced levels is no longer useful when someone is facing the cyclical ups and downs of cancer treatment.

This workshop provides you with the underlying principles that inform my whole approach to working with cancer patients. It flips traditional teaching on its head and makes it easy for you to manage multiple needs and abilities in class.

What’s the right thing to say when a student tells me they have cancer?

When a student quietly tells you they’ve been diagnosed with cancer, it can stop you in your tracks.

You already know that first conversation you have when someone discloses their diagnosis is crucial in building or maintaining a relationship of trust and comfort for your student. It’s a tender time. So want to respond with kindness, confidence and professionalism but you may also feel unsure what to say, what not to say, and how to support them safely without overstepping your role.
